All On The Line
Elections matter. Electing fair map advocates to the Virginia legislature has paved the path to fair maps in the Commonwealth. The governor-elect in Kentucky, who has already committed to restoring voting rights for 140,000 Kentuckians, will have the power to veto a gerrymandered congressional map brought to his desk. The results of yesterday's elections were a big victory in the fight for fair maps.

Here's why this fight in North Carolina is a pivotal moment: Three of the flipped seats in Virginia yesterday were in newly redrawn districts -- a direct result of a court case holding that several districts in the state were racial gerrymanders that diluted the voting power of African-American communities. When maps are drawn fairly, the will of the voters prevails.

In other words, when voters vote under fair maps, we get fair results -- and in many cases, it unlocks the partisan stranglehold that conservatives have at the state level.

That's why our attention -- and our grassroots organizing power -- is focused on North Carolina today, where a panel of judges unanimously decided that the current congressional districts cannot be used in the 2020 elections because they will likely be found unconstitutional.

Legislators began the process of redrawing the map this week. But it quickly became apparent that map manipulators are trying to use this redraw as an opportunity to continue to push unfairly gerrymandered maps.

The map that the committee has proposed to start with was drawn using racial data and maintains extreme partisan bias -- two key indicators of unfair gerrymandering. That's why we're calling for a more fair and transparent redistricting process.

Help us win this fight for fair maps in North Carolina -- we have already activated our grassroots network to call their legislators and demand a fair map redraw. And we're starting to organize in anticipation of public hearings. But we need your support to help fund this effort.

P.S. If you have a friend who lives in North Carolina let them know about this redraw and urge them to contact their legislator. They can use this handy tool to demand transparency in the process.

Continuing investigations and the after-shocks of Lava Jato are impacting corporate behavior, prosecutorial actions, and investor concerns. Invigorated use of anti-money laundering and asset forfeiture laws, plea bargaining and leniency agreements, and coordinated cross-border enforcement, have heightened extraterritorial risks for Brazilian corporations and individuals.

Join us for a panel discussion that will update Lava Jato related developments, highlight recent innovations in prosecuting white collar crime, and evaluate applicable legal defenses. The panel will also discuss the evolution of corporate compliance programs in Brazil, and best practices to protect against unlawful behavior.
