LUNCHEON WITH MAYOR OF SALVADOR (BAHIA) ANTONIO CARLOS MAGALHÃES NETO (ACM NETO)
November 9, 2018
Time: 12:00 PM to 2:00 PMLocation: Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce, Inc., New York, New York

Please join us for a roundtable luncheon with Antonio Carlos Magalhães Neto (ACM Neto), Mayor of Salvador in the state of Bahia, and President of the DEM Party.  ACM Neto was first elected mayor of Salvador in 2012 and reelected in 2016, with 75% of the vote on the first ballot.

The Mayor’s support may be attributed to the success of his initiatives to improve the quality of life and the economic opportunities for the city’s inhabitants (Soteropolitanos). At the luncheon, the Mayor will present the steps he has taken during his administration under the initiative “Salvador 360.” He will focus on jobs and companies created by Salvador’s support of start-ups, successes within the city’s incubation hub, investments to rebuild Salvador’s historic downtown (a UNESCO heritage site), and new opportunities in the tourism industry.

CYBERSECURITY IN BRAZIL, WHAT'S NEXT?

November 13, 2018Time: 8:00 AM to 10:00 AMLocation: Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, New York, New York

Brazil has just joined a global trend toward tougher privacy laws with a bold new statute, the Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados Pessoais or “LGPD” – imposing major new obligations on all companies that touch Brazilian consumers.
This event will explore how companies, across business sectors and around the globe, now must plan for compliance.  What new data privacy and security obligations will companies now have to honor in the day to day?  What will life be like in a world where data breaches in Brazil must now be publicly disclosed?  How can companies learn from the US experience with cybersecurity law and from the European experience with GDPR?  In light of the election results, how will Brazil actually enforce the LGPD when it takes effect in 2020?
Please join the Chamber as an expert panel explores these questions and more.
Moderator:
Jeremy Feigelson, Partner, Debevoise & Plimpton LLP
Speakers:
Edgar D'Andrea, Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers
José Carlos Sá, Information Security Officer, Banco do Brasil
Marcela Ejnisman, Partner, TozziniFreire Advogados

CLIENT ALERT

What Happened: On November 1, 2018, President Donald J. Trump issued an executive order that requires the blocking of all property and interests in property in the United States or that comes within the possession or control of a US person belonging to any person determined by the Secretary of the Treasury to operate corruptly in the gold or other identified sectors of the Venezuelan economy, with the purpose or effect of misappropriating Venezuelan resources in those sectors for personal, professional or political gain.
The Bottom Line: The Trump administration continues to ramp up pressure on the government of Venezuela by sanctioning persons who are perceived to be plundering Venezuela’s wealth for their own corrupt purposes, degrading Venezuela’s infrastructure and natural environment through economic mismanagement and confiscatory mining and industrial practices, and catalyzing a regional migration crisis by neglecting the basic needs of the Venezuelan people, in this instance by targeting persons who operate corruptly in the gold or other identified sectors of the Venezuelan economy.
