On the Senate floor late Friday night, before this tax scam passed with 51 votes, I asked my colleagues a simple question: "If we want to cut middle-class taxes, why don't we give a tax cut to the middle class?"

Not one of the 51 senators who voted for the bill answered me.

Senate leaders have tried for months to sell this as a "middle-class plan." But they can't pretend anymore. They know what the American people know:

These tax breaks aren't going to workers, or to create new jobs, or to struggling Ohioans or Texans or Virginians. They're going to corporate stockholders and executive bonuses.

Fight back with OFA, and stand up for a plan that helps the middle class.

Non-partisan estimates say that if this bill passes, it will add a trillion dollars or more to our deficit.

And when this same group of senators turns around, weeks or months from now, to decide it's time to cut spending ... they'll do it by slashing the programs that so many Americans rely upon most: Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare.

Some of them have already started threatening these programs, all so we can make the lives of billionaires and wealthy corporations a little easier.

It's cruel, irresponsible, and morally reprehensible. I won't stand for what it will do to Ohio and to our country. I hope you won't, either.

OFA is fighting for progress, and they need your help. Say you're in today:

I'm in

José Leonilson: Empty Man

On view: September 27–February 3, 2018
Curated by Cecilia Brunson, Gabriela Rangel, and Susanna V. Temkin

José Leonilson (1957-1993) came of age as an artist during the 80s generation in Brazil. What he shared with this diverse artistic milieu was the so-called ‘joy of painting,’ rediscovered in the years following the end of Brazil’s dictatorship. What separated him from his contemporaries was his personal way of working and his distinct aesthetic centered on raw emotional feelings, introspective musings, and private affairs.
This Fall, Americas Society will present José Leonilson: Empty Man, the first U.S. solo exhibition of this key Brazilian artist. Focusing on Leonilson’s production as a mature artist, the show will feature approximately fifty paintings, drawings, and intimate embroideries made between the mid-1980s until 1993, when the artist died of AIDS. This short yet prolific period showcases the artist’s fully developed language, connecting Leonilson’s oeuvre with contemporary art practices, Brazilian vernacular traditions, and global issues prompted by the AIDS crisis. By taking as its starting point the works produced during the last three years of his life and moving backwards into the 1980s, the exhibition maps Leonilson’s artistic journey following the reverse chronology of T.S. Eliot: “in the beginning is my end. In my end is my beginning.”

Exhibition Overview

Delirious times demand delirious art, or so this exhibition proposes. The years between 1950 and 1980 were beset by upheaval. Around the globe, military conflict proliferated and social and political unrest flared. Disenchantment with an oppressive rationalism mounted, as did a corollary interest in fantastic, hallucinatory experiences. Artists responded to these developments by incorporating absurdity, disorder, nonsense, disorientation, and repetition into their work. In the process, they destabilize space and perception, give form to extreme mental, emotional, and physical states, and derange otherwise logical structures and techniques. Delirious explores the embrace of irrationality among American, Latin American, and European artists.

Alfredo Volpi

November 4, 2017 - January 6, 2018
Gladstone 64

Gladstone Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of historic works by Brazilian painter Alfredo Volpi (1896 – 1988), the first solo presentation of his work in the United States. Volpi is regarded as one of the most influential and celebrated Brazilian painters, who the preeminent public intellectual Mario Pedrosa called “the master of his time.” Honing his craft during the rise of modernism in Brazil, Volpi has made a lasting impact on the history of art through his signature approach to depicting the forms of everyday experiences—from festival banners to common row houses—in vibrantly chromatic abstraction.

This is it. Find an affordable health care plan for 2018, before the federal marketplace closes tonight at midnight ET. Tell your family and friends that there's still time.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday is the perfect opportunity for Americans in all corners of the country to honor Dr. King's legacy through acts of service and community building. In past years, OFA volunteers have partnered with local organizations to host community service events. This year, OFA volunteers are also focusing on Dr. King's vision of a compassionate, fair society -- one where everyone's voice is heard.

For the 2018 MLK Day of Service, in addition to community service events, supporters will be putting on voter registration events to not only provide people with access to an easy way to get themselves registered to vote, but to bring their communities closer together. We believe voter registration events are just one more way we can honor Dr. King's legacy of fighting for a more fair and inclusive democracy.

We hope you'll take this opportunity to put on your own event and help give people in your community a chance to get themselves registered to vote.

Get more information here, and sign up to host an event.

As we work to make sure that everyone in our communities is able to have their voice heard in the democratic process, these events will be a great way to bring our friends, family, and neighbors together and begin conversations about civic engagement and the issues affecting all of us.

I hope you'll take the first step, and sign up to put on an event in your area.

Get started
