The White House, Astronomy Night
Alvin DrewEver since I was a kid, I had my sights set on the stars.
And with a little bit of luck and a lot of hard work, I managed to reach my dream and see those stars up close during my travels into space as a mission specialist with NASA’s Astronaut Corps.
Every kid should get to experience the excitement of seeing the stars a little bit closer.
Which is why today, working as Assistant Director of Space and Aviation Security in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, you can guess that I’m particularly excited that tonight, the President will host the second-ever Astronomy Night, right here on the South Lawn of the White House.
We’ve invited students, educators, engineers, scientists, and visionaries from the space industry here to stargaze with us tonight, using 18 telescopes to observe celestial objects, including the Moon, Neptune, the Andromeda Galaxy, and Albireo (a binary star system).
I’m reaching out because, together, we can ensure that you and people in every corner of our nation get to join in the fun Astronomy Night. Here's how you can get ready:
Encourage your friends and family to tune into a live-stream of Astronomy Night at7:30pm ET at whitehouse.gov/live to watch the President’s remarks. You can also share this map of local astronomy nights happening around the country so others can participate remotely as well.
At the first Astronomy Night, we were lucky to have a visit from Astronaut Sally Ride, the first woman in space and one of my heroes. Watch here for a throwback and some of her words of wisdom.
Sally Ride
This year, we’re thrilled to be having a conversation with some special guests, including four NASA Commercial Crew Astronauts, Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman from Discovery Channel’s MythBusters, and more. Want to join in? Ask your astronomical questions on social media using #AskAScientist.
That’s all for now, but don’t forget to tune in, and look up.

Few things are as divisive as the views of industry participants on the financial activities of non-banks
(aka shadow banks). With over $75 trillion in global assets, shadow banks have challenged traditional (regulated) banks in influence and with their potential to disrupt the US and global economies.
Join leaders from the banking and shadow banking arena for a discussion on the forces that have driven
this new area within financial services. The panel will also focus on the expansion of private capital
into the lending arena following the financial crisis.
Host:
David J. Schwartz
CEO, FIBA

I want to talk to you straight for a second.
Today, I'm joining FLOTUS -- yes, THE First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama -- to kick off #BetterMakeRoom, a campaign for her Reach Higher initiative.
Because, listen up adults, kids these days are ready to make their debut and make their mark on the world.
I mean, let's be honest, at 17 I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. But I knew I wanted to do something creative, I wanted to make people laugh. Tidewater Community College gave me the boost I needed to put me on a path to where I am today.
Now don't just sit back. There's something every one of you can do -- right now -- to help make education a reality for more people. Here's what that is:
Show your support for young folks on your social media channels using #BetterMakeRoom. Tell them what you wish someone would have told you when you were 14. Consider it a pep talk in 140 characters. Tell them to go visit BetterMakeRoom.org and let them know their voice should be heard.
This generation is eager to make their own mark on the world and we need to make sure they get the education they need to help them do just that.
And together, we can tell the world: You better make room. Because these young people are going to do big things.
Let's inspire these kids to dream even bigger, reach even higher.
Watch out world!
